În Japonia secolului al XIX-lea, Sebei Iguchi, samurai dintr-o castă inferioară, duce o existenţă lipsită de glorie. Văduv, el se îngrijeşte singur de cele două fiice, pe care le adoră, şi de mama sa bolnavă. Când clanul îl desemnează să înfrunte un samurai rebel şi extrem de periculos, în ciuda faptului că detesta violența, Sebei e constrâns să accepte. Înainte de a lupta împotriva rebelului, Sebei poartă cu acesta o discuţie, în cursul căreia cei doi adversari descoperă că au foarte multe în comun. Duelul final nu e, astfel, decât expresia violentă a unei deznădejdi comune.
Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai, leads a life without glory as a bureaucrat in the mid-XIX century Japan. A widower, he has charge of two daughters (whom he adores) and a senile mother; he must therefore work in the fields and accept piecework to make ends meet. New prospects seem to open up when Tomoe, his long-time love, divorces a brutal husband. However, even as the Japanese feudal system is unraveling, Seibei remains bound by the code of honour of the samurai and by his own sense of social precedences. The consequences are cruel.
